NUMERACY

Some of the areas we have worked on already this term in numeracy are number problems, word problems, 2D and 3D shapes, measure, probability, symmetry, data handling and the times tables.

Data Handling

Here we have an example of a lesson where we learned about data handling. We wanted to find out how everyone in the class travelled to school in the mornings, e.g. by bike, walking, by car, etc. We questioned each other and recorded our results on a pictogram chart. This information was then used to form a graph so that we could see exactly how many of us travelled to school in different ways in the morning.

Symmetry

Here we are below learning about symmetry. We used mirrors to try to complete our symmetrical shapes. We used the mirrors to also find out if there are any symmetrical numbers and letters. In addition, we created our own patterns and swapped them with other members of our class for them to work out if they had any symmetry.

Probability

We now understand the term probability and we can start to work out for ourselves how likely something is to happen. We had a lesson where we played a game with a dice. We recorded the results of the total on a dice after throwing it 30 times. We needed to predict if one number was more likely to come up more often than others, or if this was just down to chance.

Money

If we were to go to a shop, we would now be able to pay for items ourselves because we have learnt about money. Mr. Cooper gave us a particular problem during this lesson - we had to make £5 by using just 12 coins. We could use coins from 1p up to £2 and we could use the same coin as many times as we wanted. We worked out that there was more than one way of working out this problem.
