HISTORY
This year we are learning about The Celts. The Celts were people who lived over 2050 years ago. We have learnt about The Celts inside and outside of school. We went on a trip to Castell Henllys, which is a Celtic Hillfort. We went back in time to see what it would have been like to live without all of our modern technology. Below you will find some examples of what we did during the day.
Before we went on the trip, we discovered that the Celts used to live in buildings called roundhouses. To prepare us for our trip, we acted out a role-play in our yard by designing and building our own roundhouse. To achieve a perfect circle, one of us had to stand in the middle of the yard, holding a piece of string. Another person had to hold the other piece of string tightly and walk around the person in the middle whilst making a chalk mark on the floor. This left us with a perfect circle and a base to build our house on.

Once the posts had been inserted around this line that was drawn on the ground, it would be time to start building the house. The Celts would have worked as a team to weave sticks between these posts to form a strong structure to the house. Here we are working as a team to try to weave their sticks.

Here we are applying wattle and daub to a Celtic roundhouse. This mixture would have contained mud, blood, hair and water. The Celts had to paste this on the outside of their houses to help keep the building strong and to keep out the water and the wind. It would have also kept the warmth inside the house.

Here we are learning how to weave a Celtic basket. They worked as a team to complete as much of the basket as they could. The Celts would have used these baskets to carry objects or just as a means of decorating their properties.

The Celts used to paint their faces when they were ready to go to battle. This ritual would have also given them the status and powers of their Celtic Gods.
