We have been learning about Saint David (Dewi Sant) in our Welsh lessons this year. We dressed up for Saint David's Day in traditional Welsh costumes.
In preparation for Saint David's Day we have been making daffodils out of paper to wear as badges. We celebrate Saint David's Day because Saint David is the patron saint of Wales. You can find out more about Saint David by clicking here.
We have learnt that we wear daffodils on St David's Day because the Welsh soldiers wore these or leeks when they were fighting against the Saxons. They wore these because both the Saxons and the Welsh soldiers had similar uniforms. This made it easier for the Welsh to distinguish who was who and they eventually went on to conquer the Saxons.
To make our badges we had to use a mixture of skills and techniques. We started off by colouring the templates of the daffodil. These templates were then cut out, folded, rolled, glued, etc. Here we are rolling and gluing the stem of his flower in preparation to attach the other sections. The centre section for the daffodil would then be rolled and glued onto the petalled section to create a 3D effect. We then used sellotape to attach the petalled section to the stem.
